It was all about the comeback kid at this year's Spirit Awards, where The Wrestler was top dog with three awards, including Best Feature and Best Actor for Mickey Rourke. The Darren Aronofsky drama also won the cinematography award, making it the most-honored film of the ceremony and giving Rourke yet another Best Actor trophy going into the Academy Awards. Two films walked away with two honors each -- Milk received the Best First Screenplay award and supporting male for James Franco, while Vicky Cristina Barcelona won supporting female for Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz and, in a surprise, the screenplay award for veteran filmmaker Woody Allen.
Another Oscar nominee, Melissa Leo, was named Best Female Lead for Frozen River, while Thomas McCarthy was another surprise winner as Best Director for The Visitor. Synechdoche, New York (whose title stymied more than one presenter) was named Best First Feature, while Man on Wire and The Class, both Oscar nominees, took home Best Documentary and Best Foreign Film, respectively.
