Konon malah katanya pria itu tak pernah menjadi dewasa meskipun umurnya sudah bertambah tua. Dan itu terbukti saat lima sahabat SMA bertemu lagi tiga puluh tahun sejak mereka lulus sekolah dulu.
Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler), Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James), Kurt McKenzie (Chris Rock), Rob Hilliard (Rob Schneider), dan Marcus Higgins (David Spade) adalah lima sahabat karib semasa SMA. 32 tahun setelah lulus SMA, kelima sahabat beserta istri-istri mereka harus kembali ke kota kelahiran mereka untuk menghadiri pemakaman pelatih basket mereka semasa SMA.
32 tahun tak bertemu, mereka ternyata tak banyak berubah. Tentu saja masing-masing punya rahasia yang tak ingin mereka ungkapkan dan saat acara ini berubah menjadi reuni, mau tak mau masing-masing harus rela rahasia mereka terungkap. Ternyata, selain jadi acara reuni, pertemuan ini malah membuat masing-masing dari mereka belajar mengenali diri mereka sendiri.
Kata lucu sendiri memang susah didefinisikan. Lucu buat beberapa orang belum tentu lucu buat orang yang lain. Dan pada saat sudah melewati batas kultur maka kata lucu ini jadi semakin kabur, kecuali lelucon yang bersifat fisik alias slapstick. Kalau mau jujur, mencari sisi lucu dari film berjudul GROWN UPS ini memang sulit, terutama karena kita memang tak terbiasa dengan kultur mereka.
Secara umum, film yang disutradarai Dennis Dugan ini terlihat alami. Kelima karakter utama yang digambarkan sebagai sahabat lama ini memang terlihat seperti sobat lama. Cara mereka berinteraksi satu sama lain terlihat alami dan tak ada kesan dipaksakan. Sayangnya, di titik tertentu muncul kebosanan karena hampir sebagian besar adegan hanya soal dialog di antara mereka. Kalau Anda tak menemukan titik yang 'menyenangkan' maka bisa dijamin Anda bakal bosan.
Bisa jadi banyak orang Amerika yang menganggap film ini lucu namun secara universal, GROWN UPS masih belum seberapa dibanding THE HANGOVER, misalnya. Artinya, sebagian besar dari pemasukan yang akan didapat Columbia Pictures, bisa dijamin berasal dari daratan Amerika sendiri.
